Dear Reader,
It is important to remember that this letter was written by Joel, the Christian Scientist. It is presented here for historical purpose, as a teaching tool.
Dear Friend:
"But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding." Too often we accept some person of the past or present as authority rather than seek the wisdom and inspiration of God, yet each of us has access to the same Spirit for, as we learn here, "there is a spirit in man" - in all men.
Bronson Alcott writes: "The true teacher defends his pupils against his own personal influence. He inspires self-distrust. He guides their eyes from himself to the Spirit that quickens him. He will have no disciple."
Is this not a clear direction for us to look beyond the person to the Principle? It was Paul who said, "...and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator." Let us always realize the infinity of our own being and draw therefrom our good. Our Soul is the infinite storehouse from which we draw our good, and Emerson writes that "the powers of the Soul are commensurate with its needs, all experience to the contrary notwithstanding."
We have quoted from the Book of Job; from Romans; Bronson Alcott and Emerson. Are these things true because these great Lights uttered them? No. Let us ever remember that over the centuries great truths have been revealed by those close to God in consciousness, because these things were already true.
When we turn to inspired men, women, and books, let us always see behind the messenger to the message. Then we will find authority within ourselves, and confirmation and conviction whenever Truth presents itself to us through person or book.
We never really love Truth until some measure of it has come to us through our own consciousness. Then we become fellows, friends, companions with all who have ever lived the same experience; we enter the very experiences of Jesus, Paul, John, and we share the thrills of all God-conscious men and women of all time. It makes us a part of the universal desire to bring the entire world into the awareness of the oneness of being. Our hearts throb with the hopes and dreams of the great Revelators and we know the same compassion they knew for the world that will not hear. It is a glorious company to join - the Soul-inspired of all ages. It is a possibility to you and to me as we seek, a little more each day, the empire of our own Soul.
Sincerely yours,
Joel S. Goldsmith
