How to Get Free Healings

I have used this page title and chapter heading to get your attention and bring you to this page. We need your help, your prayers, and your commitment to The Infinite Way.  You see, in truth, there are no free healings.

We do not bill for healing, but that does not mean they are free. If you find that you are looking for a free healing or free teaching, please go within, meditate and see if your consciousness feels this to be a correct desire. Are you really willing to take something for nothing?  Are you really willing to ask another who has spent years studying, years meditating, and personal funds for tapes, classes and books to help you for free, without a thought of gratitude for their time and successful healing?

Joel's healing work began in Christian Science. There, practitioners charged a fee for their work. Each prayer session was billed like a doctor visit. Joel had a revelation one day while contemplating all of the Infinite Way patients that owed him money, and he decided that he would not send out another bill, but trust that God would supply him. IT did to the exact amount of his outstanding balance. From that moment on, Joel did not want Infinite Way healings to be for a fee.  He knew that healing gratitude would supply the practitioner.

For some reason, not the fact that there are no successful healings, students new to the work, and often old to the work, do not remember to offer their practitioner gratitude. I have been in the work for over 20 years and I will speak from experience.  There are many beautiful healings that so miraculously prove the principles, yet the patient disappears, never to be heard from again....UNTIL the next problem arises.

This interesting turn of events may be the reason there are so few practitioners and teachers in our work. The student's lack of payment may be why many today sell their own "plagiarized" creations. It is not an excuse, for God does provide the practitioner, teacher and student in a myriad of ways. However, we are now at a critical point in the work.  We must figure out a way together to support The Infinite Way and its workers. We must find a "practice" as Christian Science did where the students/patients know what is expected and needed of them. The famous phrases: "nothing is valued if it is free" and "a workman is worthy of his hire" come to mind.  We must begin to practice these human courtesies and take a certain amount of personal responsibility for the future of The Infinite Way and its workers.

Our current culture lets us access so much, so many, so quickly. The Internet seems free.

Some of us have not been raised to understand that when we ask something of another, we have a duty to give back to them in some way. Some feel that because there is always a person to answer the phone when there is a call for help, there is always an answer when you write to us, email , that there is no reason to do more than take care of yourself.  Some feel that anything of the Spirit should not be charged.  (Is this not egotistical? Are we not participants in keeping the work available for others? If we get a healing, do we not consider how to ensure that the healer is there for the next person?)

There are holy men in other countries who are supported by their community.  The holy man is cared for, fed and honored as a guest in the house or at the table. These holy men/women only provide spiritual services. They are fed and housed and clothed because their services are valued. In American Indian culture, the holy man is revered. In India, they can travel with only a bowl and are fed and clothed and supported.

It is our Western culture, Joel tells us, that does not value the spiritual worker. Further, many religious workers have, themselves, disappointed us, shown a lack of integrity, and betrayed trusts of those close to them.  This cannot be our fear in The Infinite Way.

It is time for all of us in The Infinite Way to take stock of what we are expecting from one another and how we are living the principles. Are we just here for ourselves, either to get healing or teaching? In short, GETTING?  Or, are we also beginning to feel that this truth needs to be supported and maintained for future generations? Are we recognizing the need to be GIVING? In both cases, Joel says that as ONE we are merely giving to ourselves. The right hand giving to the left.

Joel did not leave instructions to teachers about how to go about the practice. He wanted each one to find their own personal style and way. This is wonderful, but also very difficult.  There is no one to go to for a practicum or assistance in how to deal with students, calls and letters. The teachers who were left to mentor the next generation, have failed at that job. Now there are hardly any who heal or teach exclusively with Joel's work.  Those of us following Joel's request, struggle to find our way. We ask Grace to guide us, listen for the Still small voice and learn by experience.

Today, a teachers and/or practitioners experience many calls at all times of the day and night, many letters assuming we have unlimited time, healings that are met but are never thanked or reported, and it goes on and on. Add to this, that usually after many weeks/months/years with students, the teacher is crucified - vilified, criticized and abandoned.

One quickly realizes Joel's warning: Do not enter this work unless  you are dragged kicking and screaming. It is not pleasant, it is not lucrative, it is not rewarding on any level but within our own hearts. There we know what we do and how much we love the students, patients and the work.

Please continue reading about the expectations for teachers, students and practitioners, below.

Our Expectations of Practitioners and Patients

Let me begin with these human characteristics to be assumed for both Infinite Way Practitioners and Patients:

Honesty, humility, deference, gratitude and a commitment to spiritual healing as taught by Joel Goldsmith through his books and tapes.

Expectations of Patients:

  • The patient has personally requested our help

  • The patient does not expect a particular outcome, healing is about finding God and thereby, worldly harmony

  • The patient believes that the practitioner can heal him

  • The patient respects the practitioner's request to only ask for help, not share details. The patient does not ask for human advice.

  • The patient respects the practitioner's time, realizing they are not social friends

  • The patient understands the importance of reporting a healing, even if it is not what the patient desired or expected.

  • The patient understands their responsibility to express gratitude in some form to the practitioner.

  • In Christian Science, the patient engages one practitioner at a time. However, in the Infinite Way, we have no such rule. Joel once stood before several hundred in a class with a cold and jokingly mentioned that he never feels the need to hide an erroneous appearance that comes to him, and that he fully expected to be healed by the end of the class with so many working for him.

The point was that we all continue to meet appearances of error, as even Jesus did. We simply do our treatment work and forge on. Further, since Christian Science charges a fee, if one goes to several practitioners, not only do they all deserve their fee, but when the healing comes, we do not know from whom it came or if both.

So, if an IW patient asks for help from several practitioners, they are honor bound to express gratitude to each of them when the healing occurs.

Expectations of Practitioners:

  • The Practitioner has studied The Infinite Way, experiences a God contact -without the contact there can be no spiritual healing. The healing will be mental and thereby, not permanent - the claim will return or be replaced by a new claim.

  • The Infinite Way Practitioner is an exclusive student of Joel Goldsmith's healing principles.

  • There is no mixing of other healing arts/teachings with The Infinite Way.

  • You have been called by Grace to the work, not simply "intellectually decided to be a practitioner."

  • The Practitioner does not look to the patient for supply, for social contact or for a carnal purpose.

  • The Practitioner is available for as long as the patient needs help

  • The Practitioner does not solve a problem on the level of a problem.

  • The Practitioner is not an employer, a psychiatrist, a real estate agent, matchmaker or companion. We use a practitioner for spiritual healing only.

  • The Practitioner does not give "human" advice.

Our Expectations of Students and Teachers

Expectations of Students:

  • Students choose a person to be their teacher and ask permission to be a student.

  • A student is respectful of the teacher's time realizing that even writing emails with questions to be answered, constitutes asking for instruction. This implies a teaching relationship that the student must recognize and take responsibility for.

  • Students must obey the instructions of the teacher, always checking the Within of our own being.

  • A student may not lie to the teacher -(it ends the relationship).

  • A spiritual student and teacher is a holy bond, more sacred than marriage in its commitment and honesty. The love exchanged is impersonal and unconditional.

  • A student knows the student/teacher relationship is not personal or social.

  • A student is diligent in studying and meditating.

  • A student strives to honor the sacredness and secretness of their study and teaching relationship, and does not discuss their relationship with others.

  • A student has only one human spiritual teacher at a time (this means a personal teacher and Joel would be acceptable - but not two personal teachers for each has individual consciousness). Every individual has an individual consciousness and this may cause misunderstandings and/or difficulties for all.

  • A student does not look to the teacher for emotional support, sympathy or material supply.

  • A student realizes that there will come a day when they may need to leave the teacher in order for the Comforter to come to them. (This is not always a physical separation. It may be that the student and teacher become colleagues at a given experience of illumination for the student.)

  • A serious student realizes that his/her teacher has spent decades studying, meditating and healing. For this, gratitude must be expressed beyond class tuition. An on-going relationship invites tithing and support.

  • It is unacceptable to expect something from the teacher for nothing.

Expectations for Infinite Way Teachers:

  • An Infinite Way Teacher has waited to be called. This means, not only have they experience illumination, but they have also experienced an annointing. There is never a mistake about these experiences.

    • (They may be imagined by those who "desire" to teach and they may be mentally created. However, the truth will be known both by the teacher and the student.  Only those annointed and illumined are able to impart Spirit.)

  • INFINITE WAY teachers teach only with Joel Goldsmith books and tapes

  • Teachers usually have experience running a tape group and use Joel's tapes in classes as the foundation of the curriculum.

  • Teachers are able to impart the understanding of the principles of The Infinite Way and explain what the principles are, especially the key ones: The Nature of God and the Nature of Error.

  • Infinite Way teachers do not confuse students by making/selling personal taped lessons or other their personal writings.

  • Infinite Way teachers must help all who ask and show readiness.

  • Teachers have experience living the principles and healing, usually at least ten years of study, meditating and tape work.

  • Infinite Way teachers meditate, can teach meditation, and impart consciousness.

  • Infinite Way teachers do not seek students, but wait for students to find them.

  • Teachers may announce their class, but not advertise.

  • Infinite Way teachers do not look to students for their supply. (Some give away what students pay them if they are supported by other means.)

  • Infinite Way teachers continue their own study and practice of The Infinite Way, listening regularly to tapes, meditating and doing healing and World Work.

  • Infinite Way teachers operate from love. Lessons are guided by Grace and are never personal or intended to control the student.

  • Infinite Way teachers understand hypnotism/mesmerism and mind control. It is forbidden to ever impose themselves on another's consciousness.

  • The goal for all teaching is to bring the student to a personal understanding of their individual, true identity and to experience the relationship of oneness with Our Source.

Note: Questions and comments are welcome.

From Joel's July 28, 1963 Hotel Talk

When the Master said "I have overcome the world," I believe he meant "I" have overcome 'me' - "the 'me'" who can be rewarded and the 'me' who can be punished - both have to go.
