There has always been a nagging issue about Joel being a Mason.  I think that he was taken by the custom of his time. The Masons were often an idealistic group of business men.  Much has changed since. My teacher, Will Hoff, was a Mason also and we often had our weekend meetings at Masonic Lodges.  I have no real answer about this topic, but thought you might like these articles I found.
